Mastering Portrait Photography On Location
April 8, 2024

Join award winning photographer Paul Wilkinson for a intensive workshop creating stunning portraits on the iconic streets and buildings of Oxford, using amazing light and locations wherever we find them...

Everywhere you look, there is beautiful light. Whether it’s the harsh midsummer sun, a hazy overcast sky, the warmth of a winter sunset or the glow of the high street shop fronts, you are surrounded by usable light. And when you’re out on location, the joy of finding that perfect patch for a picture? Well, for a photographer, at least, not much beats it.

In this portrait photography workshop on location in Oxford, we will spend the day hunting down light and exploring different locations, using the streets and alleyways of this iconic city around you as your studio and inspiration!

Working with just your camera, a lens, and your client is one of the fastest and most creative ways to produce stunning portraits particularly in amongst the buzz of a vibrant city.  Whether you are an aspiring pro or an experienced enthusiast, learn how to take beautiful portraits with nothing more than your camera and a sharp eye.

We will show how light affects your images and how to make the very best of any location:

    • The fundamentals of reading light
    • The principles of creating stunning portraits
    • Understanding the limits of your camera settings (and just how much the technology can achieve!)
    • Lighting the face and the figure
    • Finding and using those perfect patches of light in the everyday environment
    • Getting incredible light out of everyday situations
    • Posing and guiding your subject to get the best out of them
    • Dealing with the weather (but let’s hope it’s a hot, sunny day!)
    • Ongoing personal feedback

The number of attendees is strictly limited in this workshop, ensuring everyone has plenty of time to apply what is being shown.  This is a hands-on day rather than a desk-based masterclass. Paul will assess your images throughout the day and provide guidance and feedback.

This workshop is intended for all skill levels, whether you’re an enthusiast just beginning your journey or an established pro looking for ways to create incredible images while out and about. Whatever level you are, you’ll leave the day inspired and full of ideas and confidence to create stunning portraits wherever you might find yourself!

Please note this is an on-location workshop in Oxford, so we anticipate a significant amount of walking and spending time out on the street – you will need suitable clothing (whatever the weather may throw at us!)

If you have questions about the workshop, please don’t hesitate to get in touch – we will be happy to talk you through it!

Each attendee will be invited to our exclusive (and private) Facebook Group, where we post all of the technical notes, behind-the-scenes insights, top tips and early bookings for our future workshops.

Some Lovely Feedback

“Mastering Available Light was my second workshop with Paul; as with the previous visit, the hospitality by both Sarah and Paul was superb. Paul’s enthusiasm for photography & portraits is infectious, coupled with his knowledge of how to find and use the best available light offered a great learning experience for myself. I now feel I have new skills to use when shooting available light. The workshop was delivered in a professional and engaging style, with the right blend of demonstrations, Q&A and feedback, I would recommend a workshop with Paul without hesitation.” Stephen

“What a pleasure to see a true master of portrait photography in action. Paul shows you that stunning portraits can be taken in almost any type of natural light if you understand how to use it effectively. Thank you for a truly inspiring day.” Lloyd

“A thoroughly enjoyable course run by Paul and Sarah which allowed me to further my knowledge of portrait photography in a relaxed and welcoming environment. I would recommend the course to anyone wanting to learn what goes into making a great portrait photo and how to analyse and utilise the best available light. Paul’s outstanding teachings were only surpassed by the beauty of the studio garden and Sarah’s excellent course organisation and hospitality. A really memorable day. Thank you.” Andrew

“The workshop was great fun, really interesting and very informative. Looking forward to attending others.” Helen
