Studio Portrait Photography: Love, Light & Laughter
Well, it has to be said, Paul’s passion was originally for location and lifestyle photography — that is, outdoors in natural light and real environments — which is, as it happens, one of the numerous reasons we selected our stunning studio with its rich variety of architectural gardens. But Paul has had a love affair with studio portrait photography too. And honestly, amongst other things, it’s always warm and dry in the studio, which doesn’t hurt when you’re working through the British winter! In fact, Paul has won as many awards for his studio work as he has for the location work that he is so well known for. In 2018 he won the title of UK Studio Portrait Photographer Of The Year with this striking image of the incredible Alex Bellini — a mountaineer and adventurer whose character absolutely jumped out of the frame. That recognition speaks to what we believe matters most: the ability to capture something genuine and compelling, regardless of whether you’re working indoors or out.

The Versatility of Studio Portrait Sessions
Studio portraiture is an incredibly versatile genre of photography. The beauty of it is that you can go in almost any direction you fancy. Images can be anything from bright, punchy, high-key images full of light and energy — think clean backgrounds, soft diffused light, and a real sense of optimism — to dark, intense, moody portraits that draw the viewer’s eye directly to the subject’s face. And there’s a whole lot in between: classic three-point lighting setups, dramatic studio portrait lighting that sculpts the face, minimal single-light portraits, even experimental colour gels and textured backdrops. Each approach tells a completely different story about the person in front of the camera. More often than not, our clients take advantage of both the garden for some location portraits and then switch into the studio for something completely different — all in the same session. It’s a brilliant way to give yourself options. Our studio and location portrait package allows you to start outdoors with natural light and flowing fabrics, then come inside and try something altogether more controlled and intimate. Some people love that variety; it keeps things fresh and gives you a real range of images to choose from at the end of the day.
